Technology and Development Trends of Thermal Paper Production

Thermal paper is widely used in various fields, such as receipt printing, labels, receipts, etc. With the advancement of technology, the production technology of thermal paper is also constantly being perfected and improved. From raw material preparation to coating, drying, cutting, and a series of complex production processes, thermal paper factory needs to strictly control, as each stage directly affects the quality of the final thermal paper.

Basic Process of Thermal Paper Production Technology

  • Raw Material Preparation: The main raw materials for thermal paper include thermal sensitive materials, pulp, and additives. These raw materials need to be mixed evenly in a certain proportion.

  • Coating: The mixed raw materials are coated on the paper. Coating methods include roller coating and spraying, with the aim of making the thermal sensitive materials evenly adhere to the surface of the paper.

  • Drying: The coated paper needs to be dried to evaporate moisture from the paper and better combine the thermal sensitive materials with the paper. Drying methods include natural air drying and oven drying.

  • Cutting: The dried paper is cut to the required size, which can be done using traditional knives or automatic cutting machines.

  • Packaging: The cut thermal paper is packaged, usually using paper boxes or plastic bags, to protect the thermal paper from damage.

Quality Requirements for Thermal Paper Coating and Raw Materials

Due to the high cost of thermal coatings, thermal paper factory usually tries to reduce the amount of thermal coating to lower production costs. To meet user needs, manufacturers need to improve the quality of the base paper while ensuring the performance of the thermal paper. Especially in terms of temperature and humidity control, strict control is required to ensure stable quality of the thermal paper.

The coating of thermal paper typically consists of colorless dye (leuco dye) and developer. The preparation of the thermal paper coating is a precise process involving various factors, such as particle fineness, dispersion concentration, time, and coating viscosity. By optimizing these factors, high-performance thermal paper can be produced.

Innovation and Development of Thermal Paper Production Technology

In recent years, the production processes in thermal paper factory have continuously innovated. For example, some patents have proposed new production processes that improve production efficiency and quality of thermal paper by using multiple coatings and drying, utilizing coatings with different particle sizes. Additionally, modern thermal paper production requires the use of multi-coating head machines, using at least 2-4 coating heads to achieve multi-layer coating on the same machine, thereby improving production efficiency and yield.

Thermal paper after coating usually requires calendering. Calendering can be achieved using cold light, with the aim of making the surface of the paper sufficiently smooth, thereby improving recording density and uniformity, while appropriately controlling curling to ensure the usage effect of the thermal paper.

Thermal paper production technology is continuously advancing with changing demands. Modern thermal paper has not only significantly improved in performance, but the production process has also become more efficient and environmentally friendly.
